Who we are: The Department of Infectious Disease and Tropical Medicine at Heidelberg University Hospital has a clinical and research mandate. The department is embedded in a research-active university campus (incl. the Heidelberg Institute for Global Health). On the research side (www.denkglobaldx.org), our department hosts a diverse and interdisciplinary team working across diagnostic innovation, clinical and implementation research, mathematical modelling, data science, and health-economic evaluation. Our environment is collaborative, supportive, and focused on generating actionable research to improve global health.
Project focus: The candidate will contribute to a dynamic portfolio of tuberculosis (TB) screening research, spanning the evaluation of novel, high-throughput molecular tests, innovative screening algorithms, and digital health tools. A core component of the role involves supporting prospective data collection and clinical evaluation studies, conducted in partnership with established research networks in high-TB-burden countries.

Your tasks

  • Develop study protocols and lead data analysis and interpretation for assigned research questions within the TB screening portfolio; author manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication
  • Contribute to prospective data collection activities, including review of study progress against milestones and identification of risks to scope or timelines
  • Completion of mandatory PhD coursework
  • Contribute to funding applications for additional research

Your profile

  • Master's degree, or equivalent expertise, in epidemiology, biostatistics, implementation research, or a related field
  • Strong quantitative and programming skills (preferably R), including data cleaning and statistical analysis; familiarity with diagnostic/screening test evaluation methods (e.g., sensitivity, specificity, ROC analysis) and/or qualitative or mixed-methods design is an advantage
  • Prior knowledge of tuberculosis and diagnostic research is an advantage, but not a strict requirement
  • Willingness to obtain, or existing certification in Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage components of a research project, and travel as needed for fieldwork
  • Strong communication skills in English and ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary, international teams; proficiency in an additional language relevant to study sites is an advantage
